Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study is to predict perception of aging on the basis of early incompatible Schema at active and inactive elders.

Methods: For this study, 150 retried employees oil and gas company South Oil were selected by cluster sampling method (included 75 active elders and 75 inactive elders) and they fill Aging Perceptions Questionnaire (APQ) and short form of Early Maladaptive Schema (YSQ-SF). The data were analyzed by Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis.

Results: The results showed that there is significant relationship between “perception of aging” and schemas of “Failure”, “Self-sacrifice”, “Emotional inhibition” & “Insufficient self-control/self-discipline” at active elders.  There is significant relationship between “perception of aging” and schema of “Emotional deprivation”, “Dependence/incompetence”, “Subjugation”, “Self-sacrifice”, & “Emotional inhibition” in inactive elders too. Also, schemas of “Insufficient self-control/self-discipline”, “Self-sacrifice” & “Emotional inhibition” predict “perception of aging” at active elderly, and just schema of “Emotional inhibition” predict “perception of aging” at inactive elderly.

Conclusion: It can be said that the individual schemas of “Insufficient self-control/self-discipline” & “emotional inhibition” prevent negative emotions. Also schema of “Self-sacrifice” affects perception of aging indirectly.
