Abstract

Smoking has been recounted as the first preventable reason behind the mortalities worldwide (Hice and Ebert, 2003). There are numerous factors causing the youth and the adolescent groups to find tendencies towards smoking including the parents’ and their counterparts’ behaviors, family environment, imitating the teachers, professors and actors. In the current study, we have attempted to carry out a study according to the high rate of smoking among the young university students and also for the purpose of the reasons behind their tendencies and inclinations towards smoking and their attitudes to smoking and the effect exerted by the family coherence variables on their attitudes towards smoking. Therefore, the objective of the current study is the survey of the relationship between family coherence and the students’ attitudes towards smoking. The study population includes Ilam University boys and girls students who totally were 4260 individuals. Based on the Kerjesie and Morgan’s sampling table 200 individuals were randomly selected as the study sample volume, 100 boy and 100 girl university students. To measure the variables there was made use of the family coherence scale and attitude toward smoking scale. The results obtained from the collected data analysis indicated that there is no statistically significant relationship between family coherence and attitude to smoking cigarettes. Also, it is worth mentioning that a significant relationship was observed between gender, curriculum achievement, age, mother’s education level, father’s job and the attitude towards smoking, but not a single significant relationship was found between father’s education level, mother’s job and attitude towards smoking.
